The Software Engineering Manager is a passionate and experienced leader that supports a team of smart and driven engineers who are building real-world solutions for the K12 education industry. The Software Engineering Manager manages all activities within the engineering department including design, development, production, and testing. The Software Engineering Manager implements and maintains overall engineering objectives and initiatives, solves performance/operational issues to improve development efficiency, and leads and develops the engineering team. Additionally, the Software Engineering Manager provides input to strategic decisions that affect their functional area of responsibility and resolves escalated issues arising from operations that require coordination with other departments.
- Manage a diverse engineering team of backend, frontend, user experience, and data engineers.
- Understand how our software is designed, maintained, built, shipped, and monitored.
- Collaborate closely with your Account Management, Product, and Design counterparts.
- Drive process and culture improvements within your team.
- Recruit and develop team members through performance coaching and direct feedback.
- Work with engineers to set personal and professional growth goals.
- Foster an environment of accountability, collaboration, respect, and innovation.
- Implement and maintain overall engineering objectives and initiatives.
- Work with leadership and Product to set strategic objectives and OKRs for the engineering department and software products.
- Advocate for and leverage your role to improve the customer experience.
- Make technical priority decisions when engineering team can’t.
- Set and/or negotiate realistic expectations with leadership.
- Manage budget.
- Manage software vendors.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Business hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. (EST). Depending on location, these hours may be flexible to coincide with other time zones. There may be times that early morning/evening/weekend work is necessary to meet the needs of the customer.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds.
This position requires up to 10% travel. This includes conferences, visits to school projects and the occasional trip to other LSI offices.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science required
- At least three years engineering management experience
- Strong senior level software development skills; ideally with proficiency in Java and experience designing software
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to connect with a diverse audience
