Job summary:
The Red Hat Platform Tools team within our Linux Engineering team is looking for a Principal Software Engineer to join us. In this role, you will need the capacity for technical leadership to specialize in the open source LLVM toolchain and its associated Clang (C and C++) front end to work on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). You will help investigate, contribute to, build, debug, and analyze these and related tools. You will also work as part of the internal Red Hat team and upstream community projects. In this role, you will be part of a growing team focused on software development for compilers, language runtime libraries, and user space tools packages. As a Principal Software Engineer, you will also work with the Quality Engineering (QE) and Continuous Integration (CI) Development teams in support of enterprise grade releases. You will join a fast-paced, talented engineering team ensuring quality and innovation in Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). Come prepared to contribute to the security and stability of strategically important components within Red Hat’s core products. The work location for this position is flexible. Red Hat has offices across the globe, though candidates in North America and Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) are preferred due to timezone overlap with the wider team. Home-based, remote candidates will also be considered.

Primary job responsibilities:
  • Work with the Red Hat Toolchain team to build and analyze world-class tools through practical development
  • Interact with developers and communities internally within Red Hat, and externally in the open source LLVM and Clang communities
  • Contribute to the Fedora LLVM or Clang toolchain content and packaging
  • Develop, build, and support, Red Hat internal software tools based on LLVM and Clang to meet the needs of internal Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) engineering teams
  • Investigate and fix LLVM and Clang compiler bugs, efficiency improvements, and optimizations in line with business needs and your skill level
  • Help build expert knowledge within the team on the LLVM and Clang tools, answering directed technical questions from first hand knowledge or through technical investigation
  • Contribute to the team’s work on related C and C++ tools and runtimes in line with business needs and your skill level
  • Plan and track development and regularly report progress to team management
  • Lead and direct other engineers who may be assigned to your work area
Required skills:
  • Solid communication skills
  • Proactive and collaborative approach
  • Ability to work on your own in a small team environment
  • Ability to coordinate and prioritize multiple tasks
  • Familiarity with the open source development model
  • BS or higher in computer science, computer engineering, or technology-related discipline
  • 5+ years of experience in open source compiler or tools development; 7+ years of experience is a plus
  • Expertise in the C and C++ programming languages
  • Experience in Linux tools and libraries build varieties, including native compilers and cross compilers
  • Knowledge of version control and patch management; experience or knowledge of the actual processes to do so is a plus
  • Knowledge of and experience with LLVM and Clang and their implementations a big plus
The following will be considered a plus:
  • Current, active participation in open source community projects
  • Knowledge of GCC and its internals
  • Potential to lead a team of toolchain engineers in the future
  • Experience packaging software, particularly for operating systems
  • Knowledge of and experience with system tools internals
  • Experience with or familiarity with the Linux kernel
  • Advanced knowledge of Linux tools and libraries development
  • Advanced knowledge of of GCC, Binutils, and glibc
  • Practical experience building native compilers and cross compilers
  • Proficiency in the use of collaborative tools like Jira and Trello
