Job Summary:

We’re looking for a UX designer who has a solid understanding of graphic design, web technologies, and wireframing tools. Candidates should have a good grasp of design programs and tools like Photoshop, Illustrator or Canva. UX designers don’t always need to code, but it helps if they understand the basic building blocks of the web (HTML, CSS and JavaScript).

UX designers must also have the ability to quickly adapt to new technologies and a drive to keep their skills and industry knowledge current. They frequently work with user interface (UI) designers, web developers and graphic designers.

This position can be based out of our HQ in Portland, OR, or can be remote anywhere in the U.S.

The Team

We prize our compassionate, supportive culture; we love building software, but we're all humans first. We embrace a powerful cooperative ethos and strive to provide opportunity and equity to everyone involved in the team.

Our mantra is to deliver value early and often. We challenge one another to uphold a high standard of engineering quality, which third-party audits have repeatedly praised. Thorough code review and a dynamite QA team are pivotal to this success. We energetically resist and overcome technical debt.

Process exists just as necessary to solve problems; the engineering team has strong autonomy to determine what works. Everyone's ideas matter and the team's challenges are everyone's to solve.

The Tech

We value sharp, modern tools. Our front end is built with modern Angular, implementing Material Design via the Angular Material library for a sleek and consistent style. For robustness and productivity, we use statically-typed languages: TypeScript in the front end, backed by RESTful services written in Go. Our version control system is Git (of course).

We deploy on Amazon EC2 via the help of Terraform, and use a variety of cloud services; including RDS-hosted Postgresql, S3, ElasticSearch, Lambda, and SES. Continuous integration and delivery are supported by TeamCity. Slack, Jira, and Google's productivity suite facilitate communication and planning.

What you bring to the table

  • Deep integrity and collaborative spirit. Ethics, empathy, and communication are our foundation.

  • Resourceful curiosity; a proven desire to grow and learn, try new things, and stretch your comfort zone.

  • Attitude of ownership and the drive to make things better every day.

  • Define and own a UX practice framework and desired design tools for the organization

  • Experience in partnering with Product and Engineering from the very inception of an idea to the delivery of that idea

  • Experience in consulting with clients to understand, document and share their operational workflows/journeys and goals

  • Ability to explain user research results to internal and external stakeholders

  • Skills in developing personas and usage scenarios

  • Ability to define and execute usability testing

  • Experience in building wireframes, storyboards, sitemaps, screen flows, and product prototypes

  • Skills in analyzing user feedback and activity, and iterating to enhance the user experience

  • Ability to conduct competitor and customer analysis
