Apprentice Designer who codes - Remote

thoughtbot is looking for an apprentice designer to join our team. Apprenticeship is our position for people early in their career that provides structured support and mentorship to get you to the point where you are promoted to be a billable thoughtbot Designer. It is ideal for intermediate designers looking to build upon their already strong foundation.

Since 2011 we have worked with well over 50 apprentices. Many members of our leadership team started at thoughtbot as apprentices. The majority of people who join us as an apprentice are already working as a developer or designer. You can read more about Apprenticeship at thoughtbot.

thoughtbot is a remote company. This is a fully-remote, full-time position. We're looking for teammates who overlap with our clients' working hours. This position is available to anyone throughout the Americas (UTC-3 through UTC-10).


Salary and benefits vary by location and country. The US salary range for this role is: $70,000- $85,000.

As a thoughtbot apprentice, you will be paired with a thoughtbot mentor to set goals and grow your skills. You will build upon your existing experience as a designer and strengthen your consulting skills while working alongside your mentor. You will rotate mentors monthly and gain exposure to a variety of client projects. Additionally, you will work on special projects designed to give you additional time and training towards the goals you set with your mentor. This combination of rotations and individual projects enhances the learning process by exposing you to new client projects and new people, while also allowing you to reapply what you've learned in a new context.

The apprenticeship is a full-time paid position. We expect apprentices to be promoted to the Designer role after approximately 3 months. Salary for newly promoted Designers vary by location. The US salary range for a newly promoted Designer is: $90,000- $105,000.


We work hard to ensure that we only accept people that we believe will be successful as an apprentice and will be promoted to designer. The majority of people who join us as an apprentice already have a base level technical experience, and in many cases have already held a position working as a designer who codes.

Designers are promoted from an apprenticeship when they are very comfortable building and shipping User Interface design and front-end code.

We find that well-qualified designer apprentices will:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of user interface or product design including layout, typography, visual hierarchy, and accessibility in web and mobile interfaces
  • Have an interest in and can code in HTML and CSS
  • Additionally, possess our desired character strengths: good communicator, demonstrates initiative, motivated, enthusiastic, focused, composed, curious, optimistic, displays grit, emotionally intelligent, and conveys gratitude.

Application Timeline

The deadline for consideration for Apprenticeships starting in May 2022 is March 11th, 2022. We will consider all Apprenticeship applications submitted before the deadline in a batch. We have a limited number of positions available and we anticipate that we will get more qualified applicants than available positions. If you are not selected for the positions starting in May 2022, but we think you will be a good fit for the Apprenticeship with us, you will have the option of opting in to be considered for the next positions, which will start in August 2022.

The overall application and selection timeline is as follows:

  • Application deadline: March 11th, 2022. We will not be reviewing applications before that date.
  • All initial interviews completed by March 25th.
  • All second interviews completed by April 8th.
  • Final stage interviews completed by April 29th.
  • Final decisions by May 2nd.


Benefits vary by location. For US-based team members thoughtbot pays at least 90% of the medical insurance premiums for individuals, 80% for their families for all medical plans, and 100% of the premium for employees and their families for our core dental plan and vision coverage. We cover disability insurance, basic life insurance with the opportunity to buy up. We also offer a comprehensive 401(k) plan with company match and immediate vesting. Team members accrue 20 paid vacation days and receive 11 paid holidays per year in addition to 10 paid sick days. New parents receive at least 6 weeks paid parental leave, as well as the ability to take up to 6 months off.

Our team works in a relaxed and educational environment to develop excellent products for our clients. We work a sustainable pace of 40 hours/week. We also reserve at least 4 weeks per year for investing in ourselves, the company, and our community. Everything we do is predicated on having a great team and a culture of growing. We use the latest technologies and are always down to try new methods on both internal and client projects.
