Job summary:
The Red Hat Engineering team is looking for a Principal Software engineer to join our ecosystem engineering team. In this role, you will help us enable native Kubernetes deployment and management on-premise. You will design and implement solutions involving bare-metal provisioning, management, container orchestration, networking, and contributing to innovative technologies like Kubernetes, Red Hat OpenShift, Metal³, etc. You will collaborate with multiple Red Hat’s engineering teams and upstream open source communities around the world as part of a geographically distributed team. As a Principal Software Engineer, you’ll need to be motivated and curious and have passion for problem-solving, teamwork, Linux technologies, and open source. Successful applicants must reside in a state where Red Hat is registered to do business.
Primary job responsibilities:
  • Serve an active role in container and bare metal-related projects and upstream communities around Kubernetes, Red Hat OpenShift, and Metal³
  • Design, review, and collaborate to deliver new features
  • Implement features and bug fixes in a self-directed manner
  • Contribute to and create open source projects in Go, Rust, and Python
  • Improve software quality with tests, code review, continuous integration (CI) jobs, and repository gating
  • Participate in team architecture and design discussions with peers from both inside and outside the team
  • Coordinate feature development with other teams and product management
  • Work with our Global Customer Support team and partner support teams on resolving customer issues
  • Work with the Quality Engineering (QE) team to ensure that projects are thoroughly tested
  • Publicize your team’s work through blog posts and conference talks
Required skills:
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent working knowledge or experience
  • Deep interest in infrastructure and its containerized ecosystem like Kubernetes, Red Hat OpenShift, podman, Docker, etc.
  • Experience working in development and administration in Linux environments with knowledge of at least one language like Go, Python, C, or Rust
  • Experience in owning features or systems from the design stage to the delivery to customer stage
  • Knowledge of distributed systems
  • Knowledge of bare metal hardware administration
  • Ability to quickly learn new technologies with minimal guidance; willingness and eagerness to learn and work in languages like Go and Python
  • Proficient communication skills in English

The following are considered a plus:

  • Linux networking knowledge
  • Familiarity with bare metal provisioning, virtualization, and storage
  • Experience developing and operating micro services in Kubernetes
  • Experience with the Kubernetes Operators framework
