Job Title: Geospatial Software Architect

Location: 100% Remote

Clearance: Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident

Inalab is in search of a Geospatial Software Architect to remotely support our US Government client. The position will support activities related to scientific High-Performance Computing (HPC), such as but not limited to modeling, analysis, and optimization of scientific codes and algorithms.

Job Duties:

  • Gather information to reproduce problems for users and system environments, report bugs, and follow through on resolutions
  • Work with scientists, administrators, and staff on troubleshooting system issues
  • Provide application and system performance analysis, undertaking focused projects on profiling, optimization, and tuning of user codes, profiling, and debugging parallel programs that involve MPI calls and OpenMP directives
  • Provide training courses and webinars for researchers on the use of HPC computing systems and software, gather technical information, and provide subject-matter expertise for user documentation, primarily in the areas of scientific computing, supercomputing, and data analytics
  • Experience with the application of advanced research computing to solve research problems and strong technical and problem-solving skills are key to this role.

The specific skills required include, but are not limited to:

  • Experience or education in a scientific discipline (earth sciences, geophysics, geology, hydrology, computer science, computational science, or similar background) preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience and good working knowledge of high performance, high throughput, and cloud computing systems, advanced data storage technologies, and high-speed network technologies (InfiniBand, etc.) and their uses.
  • Demonstrated experience designing, developing, debugging, operating, and optimizing scientific models and their effective use in advanced computing.
  • The ability to analyze modeling workflows and recommend appropriate advanced computing environments, provide guidance and documentation on best practices for different platforms.
  • Be able to conduct training workshops, webinars, and one-on-one training sessions.
  • Provide science project support for the use of high-performance scientific computing environment in environmental simulation model applications.
  • Scientific domain expertise and have experience using advanced cyberinfrastructure resources
  • Experience with the application of advanced research computing to solve research problems and strong technical and problem-solving skills are key to this role.
  • Ability to prototype, develop, and support the use of new data and computational workflows.
  • In-depth understanding of data management best practices & data architectures.
  • Demonstrated skill, good judgment, and ability to meet deadlines in working with a variety of people including users, colleagues, vendors, and experts external to USGS, in a problem-solving context.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively and quickly to create clear and concise instructions and documentation and demonstrated skill in developing and making presentations on complex computing topics.


  • Expertise in working with RedHat, Debian, Scientific Linux OS flavors.
  • Experience with modifying/composing workflows using Bash/Perl/Python.
  • Demonstrated working skill with programs composed in Fortran 90 and/or C/C++ programming languages.
  • Familiarity with data analysis languages and libraries, g., MATLAB, or data analysis using Python/R with NumPy, NetCDF and other related modules.
  • Demonstrated experience with SLURM and/or other HPC job schedulers.
  • Demonstrated experience with multi-threading and parallel processing tools such as parallel profilers, optimizers, and debuggers.
  • Working experience with frequently used MPI APIs and understanding of MPI concepts such as rank and communicators, as well as familiarity with OpenMP programming paradigms.
