Location: REMOTE in US or Canada but must be available PST hours. The candidate will not be required to relocate for this role. Estimated end date: 18 months

Description: The Client is seeking an experienced and motivated Technical Artist, with a proven track record in developing and maintaining Maya and Motionbuilder tools for artists and animators. In this position, you are expected to develop and support tools that empower artists and animators to achieve our projects art and animation quality goals. It is important that you have good communication skills and able to collaboratively work with peers.

Typical Day in the Role

  • Design and implement fast, elegant, data driven Maya and MotionBuilder content creation tools
  • Support the art and animation teams with any Maya Mobu technical issues they may have
  • Create and maintain concise documentation, and provide training related to Maya MotionBuilder tools
  • Proactively identify new techniques and technologies that will improve our content creation workflows and pipelines
  • Be a positive and creative force in the team, working in a manner that supports and encourages a diverse and inclusive culture
Unique selling points: This role is focused on making improvements and additions to our custom animation tools inside of Maya and MotionBuilder, with the intent of optimizing our animation production and iteration loops. For example, we are looking to create a tool to provide animators with methods for processing motion captured animation to jump further or faster than what was captured, while automatically maintaining feet to ground contacts. Other examples would be to retarget human mocap data to quadrupeds (Rampart Denizens), amongst other tools. The investment here will really pay off to reduce the overall cost of animation production outside of Unreal.

Years of experience required:
  • Must have 5+ years of experience with Maya MotionBuilder Python scripting and API development of artist and animator friendly tools
  • Proven track record of continuously improving content pipelines
  • Understanding of data driven art content pipelines
  • Self-motivated, creative problem solver, great communicator
  • Unreal Engine 4 experience is a huge plus
  • Ability to give and receive constructive feedback
  • Passion for the industry and an understanding of industry trends and technologies
Best vs. average

The ideal candidate for this CSG role needs to be very familiar with rigging and animation workflows within Maya and MotionBuilder, in addition to having strong programming skills. Theyll be able to work well in a remote environment because we will be defining specific requirements and providing user feedback that is truly focused on those animation tools development, with little need for them to actually be collaborating on game content and features.
