Overview

Research Computing advances scientific discovery by providing researchers computational tools to accelerate their research outcomes. We support computationally enabled science by providing researchers access to computational building blocks (e.g., HPC, Machine Learning environments, Data Management Tools etc.). We also provide services, expertise, and support to researchers to optimize their use of our capabilities (e.g., HPC Consulting, UX, Software Engineering, Cloud Deployment Support, etc.), all while fostering a culture of computing through interdisciplinary collaboration and access to computational resources.

Responsibilities

  • We are seeking Post Bachelor’s software engineers to join project teams building solutions in a variety of domains. These will be around the High-Performance Computing (HPC), Machine Learning, and Scientific Data Management domains.

  • Your scope of work will be diverse and will include joining existing project teams across the Lab. The work will include designing, coding, testing, debugging, and implement software applications and pipelines in support of projects and workflows. For HPC work, this will include optimizing scientific codes to be run in parallel instances.

  • Additionally, there are opportunities for User Experience (UX) engineers, with knowledge of all UX process, with a strong emphasis on visual design.

  • You must understand and have experience in a mix of technologies such as C#, React, Python, C, C++ or Javascript. For aspects of the work, experience and interest in Machine Learning workflows will be an advantage.

Initially you will join existing project teams, and as such you will be expected to operate within specific guidelines and coding standards. As your career develops you will be increasingly responsible for building your own opportunities within PNNL and developing opportunities for other staff to follow.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidates must have received a Bachelor’s degree within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university

  • Minimum overall GPA of 2.5 required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficient in one or more compiled languages (C++, Java, Fortran, etc.), and one or more scripting languages (Python, Ruby, R etc.).

  • Working knowledge of software development processes and database systems and function.

  • For UX roles, Experience with User Research and Analysis, Ideation, Concept and Detailed Visual Design, Rapid Prototyping, Production,

  • Development & Measurement, and Product Launch

  • Interest in learning cloud technologies, data management, and/or systems development skills.

  • Bachelor’s degree in software engineering, computer science, Human Centered Interaction, or Human Centered Design and Engineering

  • Preferred minimum GPA 3.25
