Program/Role: Research / Transportation & Fuels Research Analyst

Location: Minneapolis, MN. GPI’s headquarters are based at 2801 21st Avenue South, Suite 220 in Minneapolis, MN. Remote work will be considered.

Reports to: Transportation Program Manager and Vice President

Type of Position: Full time position

Ideal start date: As soon as possible; position will remain open until filled

Compensation: Salary range: $50,000-$63,000, commensurate with experience. Benefits include health plan, 401(k) retirement plan, LTD, STD, life, vision, dental, FSA/HSA, paid time off, paid family leave, and a communication stipend.


GPI seeks a bright, outgoing, and highly motivated individual to develop and execute research and analysis on US climate goals and energy system transformation. This position will focus on research topics related to GPI’s Transportation & Fuels Team program, conducting original qualitative and quantitative research. Decarbonizing the transportation sector can be achieved through electrification, low carbon fuels, and alternatives to driving. The T&F team also explores decarbonization solutions through integration of natural carbon sinks on working lands. Experience with any of these topics is valued.

JOB DUTIES: The ideal candidate will work with GPI’s Director of Research to lead and develop research and analysis aspects of GPI’s Transportation & Fuels Program. The specific duties and responsibilities of this position include:

1. Contribute to the development and execution of a research agenda for the Transportation & Fuels program including data collection and management, qualitative and quantitative analysis, management of research project timelines and deliverables, and development of research reports, white papers, blog posts, and similar publications

2. Support existing initiatives, including clean fuel standard policy development, transportation electrification and electric vehicle analysis, working lands and natural carbon solution innovation, among others

3. Present findings and resources to a variety of audiences; provide content expertise on panels and for many types of stakeholders

4. Work with the Director of Research to develop new areas of work within the transportation & fuels sector and in other aspects of GPI’s mission


  • IT or Science-based Bachelor’s Degree or relevant proven skills and experience
  • Skilled at math, data management, spreadsheet analysis, graphical data interpretation
  • Ability to analyze data, identify trends, and communicate them to various audiences
  • Excellent research, writing, and verbal communication skills, as well as ability to prepare and convey technical material in concise, plain language
  • Experience working on a diverse team and with different communication styles
  • Self-motivated
  • Excellent time, deadline, and project management skills with ability to multi-task
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, SharePoint)
  • Experience with geographic information systems (GIS) and geospatial analysis, including software packages like ArcGIS or QGIS
  • Commitment to the mission and goals of the Great Plains Institute


  • Experience in environmental science areas such as lifecycle assessment, soil carbon, land use, or forestry
  • Experience with scientific models and software, with specific applications in carbon and emissions accounting like GREET, economic models like IMPLAN or REMI
  • Experience with analytical and/or computer programming software packages such as Javascript, Python, R, and GIS is a plus


Desktop computer and/or laptop, telephone; Microsoft Office Suite programs; teleconferencing platforms including Microsoft Teams and Zoom. Software and models such as ArcGIS, Python, R, IMPLAN.


Requires working at a desk (either sitting or standing) for extended periods. Extensive use of devices (e.g., keyboard, mouse), as well as usage of telephone/headset. May require lifting of boxes up to 20 pounds on occasion. GPI’s work often involves travel throughout the US, and applicants to this position, if remote, should expect to travel to Minneapolis a few times each year (costs reimbursed).
