Position Overview
The Principal Software Development Engineer provides accountability, technical expertise and execution necessary to the development of multiple concurrent software initiatives that are extremely complex in scope. The Principal Software Development Engineer will interact with other leaders in the company and are directly responsible for ensuring software projects are undertaken with confidence and minimal oversight. This role creates, tests, and evaluates software applications and systems to make software programs function according to specific requirements. Through technical coaching, this individual will support the continued growth of a successful Software Engineering team which supports mission-critical development at Exact Sciences in a wide range of areas of the business
Essential Duties
Include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Work with business unit leaders to direct the design and development of customized application software solutions to enable the business.
  • Work on significant and unique issues where analysis, situations, or data requires an evaluation of intangible variables and may impact future concepts, products, or technologies.
  • Design, develop, and review software applications systems within defined timelines; effectively present and clearly communicate findings at data meetings, group meetings, and project team meetings to determine the next steps and the path forward for successful outcomes.
  • Analyze users' needs to construct, deploy, and maintain general computer applications software or specialized utility programs.
  • Conceptualize new software for Exact Sciences with an eye on future needs.
  • Provide independent confident technical leadership to the software engineering team.
  • Bring formalized architectural modeling practices to the team, looking at the big picture but producing detailed architectural deliverables; including, but not limited to, functional decomposition, component, and deployment diagrams.
  • Raise capabilities in the engineering team; including, but not limited to, developing coding, testing, and deployment protocols and best practices.
  • Collaborate with platform owner on requirements and priorities to ensure constant delivery of software and value creation for Thrive.
  • Lead project technical decisions, system security, and delivery.
  • Coordinate the production runtime operation and support of platforms in the cloud.
  • Oversee an outsourced technical team and collaborate effectively.
  • Write test plans and user acceptance testing cases for quality assurance.
  • Build design and coding standards to ensure consistency across applications.
  • Participate actively and help drive the overall Thrive strategic technology roadmap.
  • Maintain knowledge of technological industry developments; provide technical assessment and guidance when evaluating or developing technologies, methods, and procedures.
  • Act as subject matter expert and strategic leader in departmental, team, core team, and/or cross-functional meetings.
  • Exercise latitude in determining objectives and approaches to critical assignments.
  • Ability to develop formal networks with key decision makers, internally and externally.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional teams.
  • Communicate clearly and frequently with all levels of the organization; including team members, project team members (core and extended), functional managers, clinical lab, and other stakeholders.

  • Ability to work on a mobile device, tablet, or in front of a computer screen and/or perform typing for approximately 50% of a typical working day.
  • Ability and means to travel 10% between local Exact Sciences locations.
  • Ability to travel 5% of working time away from work location, may include overnight/weekend travel.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a field related to the essential duties of the job; or High School Degree/General Education Diploma and 4 years of relevant experience in lieu of Bachelor’s degree.
  • 10+ years of experience developing software applications.
  • Extensive experience in Information Technology with progressing level of responsibility and technical skillset.
  • 5+ years of experience leading or directing people and/or project teams.
  • Strong proficiency of object-oriented, service-oriented architecture, and micro-service architecture and programming principals.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 8+ years of technical and leadership experience with the subject matter/unique space this role supports.
  • Experience with one of the following areas: ERP, LIMS, Bioinformatics, or clinical data management.
  • Experience working in a regulated environment (SOX, HIPAA, CLIA, GCP, FDA, ISO-13485, and/or IEC-62304).
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Clinical Lab environment.
  • Enterprise class information technology experience (Custom-COTS Hybrid, Integrated Multi-Channel End-User, Multiple Mobile Platform Delivery, Distributed Big Data).
